  Research Interests

  My research interests focus on assessing and regulating the impacts of environmental changes on hydrology. The Loess Plateau of China is a region with severe soil and water loss as well as fragile ecological environment. During the past 50 years, climate tends to be warmer and drier while land use has been greatly changed due to vegetation restoration, which causes significant runoff reduction and groundwater depletion. My research work thus focuses on two aspects in this region, i.e. the hydrological effects of climate change and vegetation restoration.

  The first aspect is to quantify/project the effects of the past/future climate change on runoff and soil erosion both on hill slope and watershed scale. Modeling methods have been widely used, such as hydrological models (SWAT and WEPP), weather generators, and climate models (GCMs and RCMs). My main work is to solve the mismatch between the course resolution of GCM outputs (grid and monthly scale) and the high resolution input requirement of hydrological models (station and daily scale), i.e. downscaling.

  The second research interest in recent years is to studying the mechanisms of hydrological cycle under the background of land use change. After carrying out field study using environmental tracers such as isotopes and chloride mass balance, the relationship among precipitation, soil moisture and groundwater is analyzed, and then the groundwater recharge mechanism and the water restoration of dry soil layers are determined.
